Lost in the Dark

I was lost in the night. It was dark and raining hard. I became afraid as I drove around in the darkness and knew not where I was. I was where I had been many times before, but nothing was the same. It was all blackness and shadows. There was nothing to guide me. The rain was pouring down and made the road all shiny and the car lights coming at me were blinding. I was all alone. Or, was I? Where am I, where shall I turn next? “HELP! Oh God, help me.” I went around again into a wooded lane. Have I been here before? Is this the familiar road that leads me home? It is still all darkness around me, but something is different. My eyes cannot see any more than they could before, but I know this is the way. A voice keeps saying, “Go on, it isn't much farther now.” At last, I go around a curve in the road and cross over a bridge. I am in familiar territory and it seems brighter though the rain is still coming down and the night is as dark as before. The difference is that I am no longer alone for there on the seat beside me sits God. He has been guiding me, giving me the strength to keep going.

We drove on, God and I, through the rain, the traffic and blinding headlights. At last we came to our street, we turned the corner. We were home. All I did was say, “ God, help me!” and He was there. Thank you, God for being with me that dark night and through all my dark nights waiting patiently for me to ask “ Help me – I cannot do it alone.”
